A membrane keyboard costs $15. A decent mechanical keyboard costs $80. A good one costs $150. A great one costs $300.

And from the outside, they all do the same thing.

So where does the money go? And at what point does spending more stop making a difference?

Mechanical keyboards cost more because every key has its own mechanical switch, and higher-end boards add better materials, more precise manufacturing, tuned stabilizers, better keycaps, mounting systems, and acoustic dampening. The important question isn't simply how much a keyboard costs, but which upgrades actually improve the experience.

 

The $15 Keyboard: Why Membrane Keyboards Are Cheap

A membrane keyboard uses a single rubber sheet under all the keys. Press a key, the rubber dome collapses, it touches a circuit, the keystroke registers.

One rubber sheet. One circuit layer. A plastic shell stamped out by the thousands. Almost no assembly labor.

That is why it costs $15. There is almost nothing in it.

It works fine. It will feel mushy after a year. The legends will fade. The rubber will lose its resistance unevenly. Some keys will feel different from others and you will not be able to fix it because the whole sheet is one piece.

But it works. And for $15, that is the deal.

The $80 Mechanical Keyboard: Where the First Premium Comes From

This is where mechanical starts.

Instead of one rubber sheet, each key gets its own switch. A spring, a stem, a housing, a metal contact leaf. Multiply that by 87 keys on a TKL and you have 87 individual mechanisms that all need to be consistent.

The switch alone explains most of the price jump. A single mechanical switch costs between $0.20 and $0.80 depending on the brand and type. At 87 keys, the switches in your keyboard cost $17 to $70 before anything else is built.

Then add the PCB. A mechanical PCB is more complex than a membrane circuit. It needs individual solder points or hot-swap sockets for each switch. On a budget board, these are wave-soldered by machine. On a better board, the sockets are tested individually.

The case at $80 is usually plastic. Injection-molded ABS or polycarbonate. Functional, light, and cheap to produce. It does the job.

Keycaps at this level are typically thin ABS. They will develop a shine within a few months of daily use as the texture wears smooth under your fingers. The legends are pad-printed, which means they sit on top of the plastic and will eventually rub off.

At $80 you get a real mechanical keyboard. It will feel significantly better than a membrane. It will last longer. And it will have obvious compromises in materials and finish that you will notice over time.

The $150 Keyboard: Where Quality Becomes Noticeable

This is the tier where most of the meaningful upgrades happen.

Case. Aluminum instead of plastic. Heavier. More rigid. Less flex. The keyboard stays where you put it and does not slide or creak under pressure.

Keycaps. PBT instead of ABS. Thicker. Textured. Resistant to shine. The legends are dye-sublimated or doubleshot, meaning they are part of the plastic itself and cannot wear off.

Switches. Better factory lubrication. Tighter tolerances between stem and housing. Less wobble on each keypress. The typing feel is noticeably smoother and more consistent across all keys.

Stabilizers. Pre-lubed from the factory, or at least not completely dry. The spacebar does not rattle. The shift keys do not tick. This is the single biggest quality-of-life difference between a $80 board and a $150 board.

Mounting. Gasket mount instead of tray mount. The plate floats on silicone or rubber gaskets instead of being screwed directly to the case. This changes the typing feel from rigid and direct to slightly cushioned. It also reduces the case resonance that causes ping and hollow sound.

Sound dampening. Foam or silicone sheets between the PCB and the case. The keyboard sounds fuller and deeper instead of hollow and tinny.

At $150 you are paying for a keyboard that is acoustically finished and materially complete. The improvements from $80 to $150 are large and tangible. You feel them on every keystroke.

The $300 Keyboard: What You're Actually Paying For

This is where it gets complicated.

The jump from $150 to $300 is not the same as the jump from $80 to $150. The improvements are real but they are smaller, more specific, and harder to notice if you are not looking for them.

Case. CNC-machined aluminum instead of die-cast. The difference is precision. Tighter seams. More uniform finish. Better weight distribution. A CNC case costs significantly more to produce because the machine cuts the shape from a solid block of metal instead of pouring it into a mold.

Internal weight. Some boards add a brass or steel weight to the bottom of the case. This adds mass, which reduces vibration and changes the sound profile. It makes the keyboard feel planted and solid in a way that is hard to describe until you have used one.

Switch selection. At this level, the keyboard often ships with enthusiast-grade switches that are individually lubed or come from boutique manufacturers with tighter quality control. The difference in feel is subtle but consistent.

Plate material. Aluminum, brass, polycarbonate, or FR4. Each plate material changes the sound and flex of the typing experience. At $300, you are choosing a keyboard where the manufacturer has selected the plate material to match the intended sound profile, not just the cheapest option available.

Finishing details. Anodized aluminum in specific colorways. Silicone gaskets instead of rubber. Weight engravings. USB-C port with a recessed housing. These are small things. They add up.

At $300 you are paying for precision manufacturing and intentional acoustic design. The keyboard sounds and feels the way it does on purpose, not by accident.

Above $300: When Does the Price Stop Matter­ing?

Above $300, you enter a different market. Group buys. Limited runs. Collector boards. Keyboards that cost $500 or $800 or more.

At that level, you are no longer paying for a better typing experience. You are paying for exclusivity, design provenance, and community status. The typing feel of a $500 board is not meaningfully better than a $300 board with the same switches and mounting system.

There is nothing wrong with wanting those things. But it is worth knowing where the line is.

For someone who types for a living and wants a keyboard that sounds right, feels right, and lasts, the meaningful range is $100 to $300. Below $100, you are accepting compromises you will notice. Above $300, you are paying for things you will appreciate but do not need.

What You Are Actually Paying For

It is not the brand name. It is not the box. It is not the RGB.

You are paying for:

The number of individual switches and their quality. The case material and how it is manufactured. The keycap material and how the legends are applied. Whether the stabilizers were tuned before shipping. Whether the case has internal dampening. Whether the mounting system was chosen for sound and feel, or just for cost.

A keyboard that gets all six right feels like a finished product from the first keystroke. A keyboard that skips any of them feels like a project you have to finish yourself.

The price should buy you a keyboard that is done. Not one that is almost done.

Mechanical switches aren't the only option at the higher end of the keyboard market. Hall Effect keyboards use magnetic sensing instead of traditional metal contacts, enabling features such as adjustable actuation and rapid trigger.

They can be excellent for gaming and certain specialized workflows, but they solve a different problem. If your priority is typing feel, acoustics, switch variety, and the traditional mechanical experience, a well-built mechanical keyboard can still make more sense.

The honest answer to "why do mechanical keyboards cost so much" is that they have more parts, better materials, and require more labor than membrane keyboards.

But the more useful answer is this: not all of that cost translates into a better experience.

A $150 keyboard with properly tuned stabilizers, a gasket mount, and PBT keycaps will outperform a $300 keyboard with dry stabilizers and no internal foam. The price is not the standard. The finish is.

When we select keyboards for the store, price is not the first filter. Build quality, acoustic finish, and material integrity are. Some boards at $140 pass. Some boards at $280 do not.

The question is not how much it costs. It is whether the cost bought you a keyboard that is actually finished.
