Short answer: it depends on your keyboard height. Not on your typing volume, not on your job title, and not on whether you have wrist pain.
The keyboard height is the variable. Everything else follows from it.
What a Wrist Rest Actually Does
A wrist rest is a padded bar that sits in front of your keyboard. Its job is to fill the gap between the desk surface and the bottom edge of the keyboard so your wrists do not bend upward to reach the keys.
That upward bend is called wrist extension. It is the position your wrist moves into when the keyboard sits higher than your natural resting hand position. Hold your hand flat, palm down. Now tilt your fingers upward while keeping your forearm on the desk. That angle is wrist extension.
Wrist extension is the problem. Not typing. Not repetition. Not speed. The angle.
A wrist rest reduces that angle by raising the surface your palms rest on between keystrokes. Your wrists stay closer to neutral. The tendons inside the carpal tunnel are not stretched. The pressure on the median nerve decreases.
That is all it does. It is not a comfort accessory. It is a geometry correction.
When You Need One
Standard-height mechanical keyboards. Most mechanical keyboards are 30mm to 40mm tall at the front edge. That is high enough that typing without support forces your wrists into extension. A wrist rest fills the gap.
Keyboards with feet deployed. The feet on the back of a keyboard tilt the board upward. This increases the height of the front row and makes wrist extension worse. If you use the feet, a wrist rest becomes more important, not less. If you can type without the feet, try it. Many people deploy them by default without realizing they are making the ergonomics worse.
Desks that are too high. If your desk surface is above your natural elbow height, your forearms angle downward and your wrists compensate by bending up. A wrist rest helps, but the real fix is lowering the desk or raising the chair.
When You Do Not Need One
Low-profile keyboards. A low-profile mechanical keyboard is roughly 20mm to 25mm at the front edge. That is close enough to desk height that most people can type with flat wrists. A wrist rest on a low-profile board can actually push your wrists above neutral, creating the opposite problem.
Laptop keyboards. Same logic. The keyboard is already close to the surface. A wrist rest is unnecessary and often gets in the way.
When your desk height is correct. If your chair, desk, and keyboard are all positioned so your forearms are parallel to the floor and your wrists are flat, you do not need a wrist rest. The geometry is already solved. The wrist rest solves for bad geometry. If the geometry is good, it has nothing to do.
The Name Is Wrong
This is the part that causes the most confusion.
It is called a wrist rest. Ergonomists would prefer you not rest your wrists on it while typing.
The correct use is as a palm rest between keystrokes. You type with your wrists floating. When you pause to read, think, or reach for the mouse, your palms settle onto the rest. When you start typing again, you lift.
Resting your wrists on the pad while actively typing applies constant pressure to the underside of your wrist. That pressure compresses the carpal tunnel. Over hours, it restricts blood flow and can contribute to the exact problems the rest is supposed to prevent.
This does not mean wrist rests are bad. It means the name implies a use pattern that is not ideal.
Use it as a landing pad between bursts. Not as a permanent surface to type from.
Material Matters
Memory foam. Conforms to your palm shape. Comfortable. Retains heat, which some people dislike over long sessions. Tends to compress permanently after months of daily use.
Gel. Firmer than foam. Stays cool. Does not conform as closely to palm shape. Holds its shape longer.
Wood. Hard surface. Provides height correction without cushioning. Some people prefer the firmness. No compression, no heat retention. Wipes clean.
Silicone or rubber. Firm but slightly soft. Easy to clean. The most durable option for daily use.
For typing-heavy work, the material matters less than the height. The wrist rest needs to bring your palms level with the bottom row of the keyboard. Whether it does that with foam or wood is preference, not function.
Height Matching
This is the thing most people get wrong.
A wrist rest that is too thin does not solve the angle problem. Your wrists still extend.
A wrist rest that is too thick pushes your palms above the keyboard and forces your fingers to reach down. Your wrists flex instead of extend. Different angle, same problem.
The correct height: the top of the wrist rest should be level with the front edge of the keyboard frame. Not the keycaps. The frame.
Before buying a wrist rest, measure the height of your keyboard at the front edge. Then find a wrist rest that matches within a few millimeters. This one measurement determines whether the rest helps or makes things worse.
Width Matching
A TKL keyboard is roughly 355mm wide. A 65% is roughly 315mm. A full-size is roughly 440mm.
If your wrist rest is shorter than your keyboard, your palms hang off the edges when reaching for outer keys. If it is wider, the extra material gets in the way of your mouse.
Match the width to your keyboard. Most wrist rest manufacturers list compatibility by layout size. Check it.

A wrist rest is not universally necessary. It is necessary when the keyboard height creates wrist extension, and unnecessary when it does not.
For most standard-height mechanical keyboards, the answer is yes. The keyboard is tall enough that typing flat-wristed without support is difficult to maintain over a full day.
For low-profile boards, the answer is usually no.
The mistake is treating it as a comfort product and buying whatever feels nice in the hand. It is a positioning tool. The height match to your specific keyboard is the only thing that matters.
