You did the research. You read the reviews. You picked a keyboard with aluminum construction, good switches, and a price tag that felt serious.

Then you started using it.

Something is off. Not broken. Not defective. Just not right. There is a wobble you did not expect. A flex you cannot unsee. A rattle that shows up only when you press certain keys at certain angles.

The keyboard is not cheap. But it feels like it is.

Here is why.

Keycap Wobble

This is the one people notice first.

You press a key and it does not go straight down. It tilts slightly. Left, right, forward, back. The stem inside the switch has a small tolerance gap, and the keycap moves within it.

On a membrane keyboard you never notice this because the rubber dome absorbs the movement. On a mechanical keyboard, every wobble is visible and tactile.

How much wobble you get depends on three things.

The switch stem tolerance. Cheaper switches have wider gaps between the stem and the housing. The keycap has more room to shift before the spring engages. Higher-end switches hold the stem tighter.

The keycap profile. Taller keycaps amplify wobble. A Cherry-profile keycap wobbles less than an SA or MT3 profile because the cap is shorter and the lever effect is reduced. If your keycaps are tall and your switches are loose, the wobble multiplies.

The keycap material. Thin ABS keycaps flex slightly under finger pressure. Thicker PBT keycaps are more rigid and transmit the wobble more honestly. Wobble on PBT feels different than wobble on ABS. Neither eliminates it.

There is no keyboard with zero wobble. But the difference between a board with well-fitted stems and one with sloppy tolerances is immediately obvious when you type side by side.

Case Flex

Pick up your keyboard by one corner. Does the opposite corner drop? Press the center of the board while holding the edges. Does the middle give?

That is case flex.

Plastic cases flex. This is normal. The question is how much. A thin injection-molded ABS case will flex noticeably under firm typing pressure. You may never consciously notice it, but your hands feel the instability underneath every keystroke. It is the difference between typing on a solid surface and typing on something that gives.

Aluminum cases mostly eliminate this. CNC-machined aluminum eliminates it entirely. The rigidity of the case determines how directly the switch feel translates to your fingers. Flex absorbs part of the feedback and makes the keyboard feel vague.

This is also why keyboard weight matters and it is not about "premium feel" as a vague concept. A heavier keyboard resists movement. It does not slide. It does not shift when you hit the spacebar hard. It sits where you put it and transmits the switch feel without absorbing it.

A 300-gram plastic keyboard and an 1100-gram aluminum keyboard with the same switches will feel like different products. The switches are identical. The experience is not.

Stabilizer Rattle

Stabilizers are the mechanisms under the spacebar, shift, enter, and backspace keys. They keep wide keys level during a press. When they are dry, loose, or poorly fitted, they rattle.

The rattle does not sound like a switch sound. It sounds like something is broken. A tick, a clack, a metallic scrape that sits on top of the keystroke and makes the entire keyboard feel unfinished.

This is the single most common reason a keyboard that costs $150 or more feels cheap. The case is solid. The switches are smooth. The keycaps are thick. And then you hit the spacebar and something rattles inside.

The fix is stabilizer lubrication and wire balancing. The frustration is that most manufacturers skip this entirely.

Plate Material

The plate is the metal or plastic sheet that sits between the switches and the PCB. Every switch clips into the plate. The plate determines how the keystroke feels at the moment of impact.

Steel plates are rigid and sharp. The bottom-out feels firm and abrupt. Some people describe this as "precise." Others describe it as "harsh."

Aluminum plates are slightly softer. The bottom-out has a small amount of give. Less fatigue over long sessions. Most mid-range keyboards use aluminum.

FR4 plates (fiberglass) are flexible. The keystroke has a noticeable bounce. Some people find this comfortable. Others find it mushy.

Polycarbonate plates are the most flexible. The sound is deeper, the feel is softer, and the board has the most give on each press.

If your keyboard feels stiff and harsh, the plate may be steel when you would prefer aluminum or FR4. If your keyboard feels mushy and imprecise, the plate may be polycarbonate when you would prefer aluminum or steel.

Most buyers never check the plate material. Most product pages do not prominently list it. But it is one of the biggest determinants of how a keyboard feels under sustained typing.

The Desk Under It

Same point as the sound article, but it applies to feel too.

A keyboard on a hard desk vibrates differently than a keyboard on a thick desk pad. The vibration from every bottom-out travels through the case, into the surface, and back into your hands.

On a bare desk, that vibration is sharp and immediate. On a desk pad, it is absorbed. The keyboard feels softer, quieter, and more stable without any change to the keyboard itself.

If your keyboard feels harsh and you have not tried a desk pad underneath it, try one before blaming the switches.

ABS Keycap Shine

This one is not about feel on day one. It is about feel on day ninety.

ABS keycaps develop a smooth, glossy texture with use. The matte finish wears away under your fingertips. After a few months, the keys you use most (WASD, spacebar, E, S, D, F) will be noticeably shinier than the keys you rarely touch.

The shine does not affect function. But it looks and feels like wear. The keyboard starts to feel old before anything is actually wrong with it. Your fingers slide across the keycap surface instead of gripping it. The texture that made the keyboard feel considered and intentional is gone.

PBT keycaps resist this. The texture holds for years. The material is denser and harder. It does not develop shine under normal use.

If your keyboard felt good when you bought it and now feels cheap three months later, pull off a keycap you use every day and compare it to one you never touch. If one is shiny and the other is matte, the keycaps are the problem.

Our Take

A keyboard feeling cheap is not usually one big failure. It is five small ones compounding.

Slight wobble on the stems. A little flex in the case. Rattle on the spacebar. A plate that does not match the typing style. Keycaps that degraded in three months.

None of these would be a problem alone. Together, they create a keyboard that never quite feels worth what you paid for it.

The fix is not buying a more expensive keyboard. Plenty of $300 boards have these same issues. The fix is buying a keyboard where someone checked for all of them before it shipped.

That is the difference between a keyboard that was priced correctly and a keyboard that was finished correctly.
